Cops in for R150,000 fine for Khayelitsha meeting

Westerrn Cape police could fork out as much as R150,000 for allegedly holding an illegal gathering in one of the city's most crime-ridden townships - Khayelitsha.
The imbizo discussed security issues raised during the Khayelitsha commission of inquiry into allegations of police inefficiency and a breakdown in relations between police and the community, chaired by Judge Catherine O'Regan and advocate Vusi Pikoli.
During the gathering residents demanded a new police station to combat crime in the township, which is notorious for its mob justice.
City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said the matter would be heard in court, where a decision on the fine would be made.
He said the police had submitted an events application to the city but had not submitted all the documents.
"They were notified that they should comply," said Smith.
He said in such instances, where an event was held without complying with the city's by-laws, organisers were held liable for everything that happened at the event.
By late yesterday Smith could not confirm whether the city had served the police with notices informing them that they had violated its by-laws.
Western Cape police spokesman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said because of the pending legal action the police would reserve comment on the matter
