South Africa’s golden swimmer Chad le Clos has bid farewell to South Africa for three months of rigorous training ahead of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro‚ Brazil.
“Leaving SA tonight for 3 months‚ next time I'm home the Olympics will be over. Hard to say goodbye #Road2Rio‚” he tweeted at about 7pm on Friday night‚ with a photograph of himself from the international departures section at the airport.
Le Clos and several members of the South African swim team will be heading to Doha in Qatar where they will be doing high altitude training to thicken the blood. The training will include sitting for 14 hours a day inside an altitude chamber.
From there‚ they will travel to Europe to participate in the Mare Nostrum Series of swim galas before moving onto America – and then Rio. The Games start on August 5.
Le Clos will be hoping to win at least three individual medals‚ adding to the two he won four years ago in the 100m and 200m butterfly‚ the Sunday Times reported recently. Le Clos is also targeting the 200m freestyle in Rio.
He will be coming up against Michael Phelps again.
It was his memorable swim against Phelps in the 200m butterfly to win gold at the 2012 Olympic Games in London that saw his father Bert coin the phrase “unbelievable!” in connection with his son – now the title of Chad’s autobiography.
