JOHANNESBURG - General secretary of the African National Congress, Gwede Mantashe, said he believed that universities should be shut down for up to a year if fee protests continue.

Speaking on the sidelines of the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union National Congress, Mantashe told the media that it would be best for institutions to close in order to protect them.

Mantashe said the ANC's National Executive Committee supported Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande's plan to cap fee increases at eight percent.
