JOHANNESBURG – More than one hundred new and redesigned emoji characters are available to iPhone and iPad users with the iOS 10.
This update includes more gender options to existing characters, including new female athletes and professionals, a new rainbow flag and more family options.
Users can also select a policewoman, a female detective, a woman wearing a hard-hat and female basketball players, surfers or cyclists.
Sophy Ridge, a Sky News correspondent commented: “It's a refreshing change from the depressingly stereotypical depictions of women in emoji land, which include princesses, brides and women dancing or getting their hair cut”.
She added that women are more likely to use emojis more than men because for feminists, language matters – it can create norms and colour prejudices.
This update was well-received on Twitter:
Apple said they were working closely with the Unicode Consortium to ensure that popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere.
